Happy 83rd Birthday Deanna! 4th December 2004

Deanna Durbin began her screen career in 1935 in an MGM movie entitled "Every Sunday" in which she starred opposite Judy Garland. When MGM decided to drop Deanna following the film, Universal Pictures snapped her up and were literally saved from financial ruin when her first feature-length movie, "Three Smart Girls", was an overnight box office success.

She made twenty-one movies with Universal, rising to become Hollywood's most highly paid female star of the period before retiring at the age of 28 to concentrate on her family and marriage to French director Charles Henri David.

Her charm, good looks and beautiful soprano voice have ensured that her records and movies continue to be appreciated, with new audiences rediscovering her as a result of repeat showings of her movies on television channels around the world.

There is a flourishing Deanna Durbin Society which publishes a quarterly newsletter containing news, information and photographs, and organizes gatherings around the world at which news is shared, films watched, records played and friendships made.

The society can be contacted at the following address:

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are the answers to a few questions I get asked...
  1. When are you going to update the site? I don't know, as I'm too busy with other things to maintain the site with all the latest news. Try visiting the recommended sites below to find more interactive Deanna web pages.
  2. How can I get in touch with Deanna? Personally I would say don't get in touch unless it's very important to you, as her mailbag is apparently overwhelming already. However, if it is important, there's an address at the bottom of Simona Sara's web page here.
  3. Where can I buy Deanna's films/music on VHS/DVD/CD? This situation depends on what country you're in. Your best bet is to one of the online discussion groups listed below and ask someone there. Alternatively, why not do a search at Google or eBay and see what you find?

I couldn't find any other Deanna sites on the Internet when I launched this one in April 1995. However, while it may have been one of the first it is certainly not the best! Take a look at these other sites dedicated to Deanna Durbin:
